Samburu trades the crowds of the southern circuit for red dust, doum palms and the Ewaso Nyiro river, home to the Special Five: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk and beisa oryx. Elephant herds and leopards both favour the riverine forest, and the pace here feels noticeably wilder than the Mara or Amboseli.
