Amboseli Map: The Park Edge, Both Airstrips and the Route In

Amboseli packs a huge view into a small park. Reaching Amboseli

Coming from Nairobi, plan on roughly 240 km and four hours on the road: take the Mombasa highway down to Emali, then turn south on the C102 toward the Kimana side of the park. An alternative goes via Namanga along the Tanzania border road and enters from the west, taking about the same time overall. By air, it is a short 45-minute flight from Wilson Airport landing right inside the park.

How this ecosystem operates

Amboseli centers on a set of swamps kept wet by Kilimanjaro’s meltwater, which seeps down through the volcanic rock below. Elephants stand chest-deep in the water through the day and move out toward open ground as evening falls, and that walk out is when you get the classic shot of tuskers against the mountain. Observation Hill is the one spot with a wide view over the whole system. Expect dust: the old lake bed west of the swamps stays a dry, glaring pan for most of the year.

The best window for mountain views

Cloud covers Kilimanjaro for much of the day, all year round, so dawn and the last hour of daylight are your real chances. The dry stretches from June through October and January into February bring the clearest skies and draw the largest elephant herds to the swamps. March through May is the green season: fewer visitors, lower rates, big dramatic skies, and the mountain shows itself less often.

What is the distance from Nairobi to Amboseli?

Is Kilimanjaro visible from inside Amboseli?

Yes, it is the defining feature of a visit here. The peak stands about 50 km away across the border in Tanzania, and it shows up most clearly at dawn and again as the sun drops during the dry season.

What airstrips serve the park?

Amboseli airstrip, located inside the park, handles the scheduled flight traffic. Tawi airfield sits just outside on the Kimana side and serves a handful of nearby lodges. Check with your lodge to confirm which one applies to you.

How long should a visit to Amboseli run?

Two nights is enough to see it well. Given how compact the park is, most travelers pair it with Tsavo West or the Mara instead of extending the stay.
