Ask five websites about the Nairobi to Tsavo driving distance and you will get five different answers. That is because Tsavo is not one point on a map. It is two national parks, East and West, with entry gates scattered across more than 150 kilometers of highway. The honest answer depends on which gate you are driving to and which camp you have booked.

Nairobi to Tsavo driving distance: Tsavo East gates
Tsavo East is the larger of the two parks, and its gates sit at different points along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
- Manyani Gate, the main northern entrance, is about 245 km from Nairobi. Expect 4 to 4.5 hours on a normal day, longer with roadworks or heavy trucks.
- Voi Gate, near Voi town, is about 330 km out. Budget 5 to 5.5 hours.
- Buchuma Gate, on the road toward Mombasa, is roughly 350 km, closer to 5.5 to 6 hours.
- Sala Gate, on the eastern side near the Malindi turnoff, is the furthest at around 385 km, typically 6 to 6.5 hours.
If your camp sits near Manyani, such as lodges close to the Athi River, you are looking at a manageable half-day drive. If it sits deep in the eastern section near Sala, plan for most of a full day, with stops.
Distance and drive time from Nairobi to Tsavo West
Tsavo West is smaller and closer to the highway’s midpoint, which makes it a touch quicker to reach for most camps.
- Mtito Andei Gate, the busiest entrance, is about 233 km from Nairobi, roughly 3.5 to 4 hours.
- Mbuyuni Gate, near Voi, sits at about 320 km, close to 5 hours.
- Chyulu Gate, on the park’s northern edge toward Amboseli, is harder to pin to a single figure since routes vary with road quality. Treat 260 to 290 km as an indicative range, 4.5 to 5.5 hours.
Camps near Kilaguni or Ngulia, both close to Mtito Andei Gate, are the quickest Tsavo lodges to reach from Nairobi by road.
The route: Nairobi-Mombasa Highway (A109)
Nearly every drive to Tsavo follows the same road, the A109 Nairobi-Mombasa Highway. You leave Nairobi through Athi River and Machakos Junction, pass Emali and Kiboko, then reach Mtito Andei, where the highway splits traffic toward both park sides. From there it continues through Manyani and on to Voi.
This is Kenya’s busiest trunk road, carrying container trucks between the port of Mombasa and the interior. That matters for planning. Expect slow convoys behind heavy vehicles, especially on the climbs near Machakos and Kibwezi.

Road conditions and construction
The tarmac from Nairobi to Mtito Andei is generally good, with a few pothole stretches near Kibwezi that come and go depending on recent repairs. The section from Voi toward Mombasa has been under intermittent construction for years, with single-lane diversions and slow-moving sections. Build in extra time here rather than assuming a fixed pace.
During the long rains, usually April to May, and again in November, side roads leading to some gates cross black cotton soil. This soil turns to thick, sticky mud within minutes of rain and can trap even a capable vehicle. If you are traveling in the wet season, call your lodge ahead and ask about current gate road conditions.
Can you drive it in a normal car?
The main highway is sealed tarmac the whole way, so a standard sedan can handle the drive to any gate without trouble in dry conditions. Once you are inside the park, tracks are unsealed murram and sand. A 4×4 with reasonable clearance is strongly recommended for game drives, and essential if rain is forecast.
Self-drive safety and precautions
Self-driving to Tsavo is common and generally safe if you follow a few rules.
- Drive only in daylight. Kenyan highways have limited lighting, unmarked speed bumps near towns, and livestock that wanders onto the road after dark. Aim to arrive at your gate before 5 p.m.
- Keep to the speed limit through towns like Salama, Emali, and Mtito Andei, where police checkpoints are common.
- Carry cash for fuel and tolls, since not every station along the route accepts cards reliably.
- Fill your tank in Nairobi or Emali. Fuel stations thin out past Mtito Andei.

Break the drive rather than pushing straight through. Most travelers stop at Mtito Andei for fuel, food, and a stretch. Inside Tsavo West, Mzima Springs is worth the detour once you are through the gate.
