Great Migration River Crossing Safari

From late July to October the wildebeest are in the Mara, and this safari is built around one thing: giving you the best possible chance of a river crossing. Five days is the honest minimum. Crossings do not run on a timetable, and the difference between seeing one and missing one is usually patience.

Your guide reads the herds each morning and positions early at the likeliest crossing points. When the first animal commits and ten thousand follow, you will understand why people come back for this year after year. Between crossings, the Mara in migration season is simply the busiest wildlife theatre on earth.

Tour Plan

1 Nairobi to the Mara

Drive from Nairobi with lunch at camp and an orientation game drive to find where the herds are sitting.

2 Crossing watch

Full day positioned on the Mara River with a picnic. We wait where the herds are building and let the day unfold.

3 Crossing watch and predators

Second full crossing day. The riverbanks in season draw lions and crocodiles, so slow hours are rarely quiet ones.

4 The wider Mara

A day off the river among the mega-herds on the open plains, with the option of a dawn balloon flight over the migration at extra cost.

5 Return to Nairobi

Last early drive, then back to Nairobi arriving late afternoon.
