Nairobi to Amboseli: Distance, the Two Routes and Drive Times
Amboseli is the simplest big park to reach from the capital, and this page shows exactly how. The standard Nairobi to Amboseli drive covers 240 km and takes about four hours via Emali; a second road through Namanga works better for travellers arriving from Tanzania. Both are marked on the map below, with each leg, its timing and its gate laid out.
The routes, mapped
The red line traces the main Emali road: southeast along Mombasa road, then south on the C102 to Kimana Gate. The brown lines mark the broader road network, including the A104 Namanga option to the west. The green outline is Amboseli, with Kilimanjaro sitting just over the border.

Route one: through Emali (the usual drive)

Roughly four hours door to door. The C102 section is the reward: on a clear morning the mountain fills more and more of the windscreen for a solid hour.
Route two: through Namanga
Drive the A104 south to Namanga town on the Tanzania border (160 km, about 2.5 hours of decent tarmac), then head east on graded roads for roughly 75 km to Meshanani Gate on the park’s west side. Total driving time lands in the same range, four to four and a half hours. Travellers crossing over from Arusha will find this the more logical road, and it brings you into the park past the dry lake bed, a very different opening view.
Flying covers the same ground in 45 minutes, from Wilson Airport straight to the airstrip inside the park, with departures scheduled daily. Read alongside our Amboseli map for where the airstrips and swamps fall once you’re inside.
Turning it into a loop
Amboseli is rarely visited on its own. The two strongest add-ons: press on east through the Chyulu gate to Tsavo West (about four hours of rough but scenic track), or head back to Emali and take the Mombasa road on toward the coast. How many kilometres separate Nairobi and Amboseli?
About 240 km on the main Emali road, which takes roughly four hours to drive. The Namanga road covers a similar distance in about the same time.
Which gate do you reach coming from Nairobi?
The Emali road brings you in at Kimana Gate on the park’s eastern side; the Namanga road arrives at Meshanani Gate on the west. Most lodges sit nearer the Kimana side.
What state is the road to Amboseli in?
Good. Tarmac covers the entire distance to Kimana town, and only the last few kilometres up to the gate are graded track. Traffic gets heavy on the Mombasa-road stretch, so an early start makes for an easier drive.
Can Amboseli work as a day trip out of Nairobi?
It can be done if you leave before dawn, though eight hours behind the wheel for three hours in the park is a tough trade. Staying one night changes the whole pace of the trip.
