How Many Parks Should You Really Visit in 7 Days?
Most 7-day itineraries try to fit three or four parks into the week. That usually means Nairobi, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, and the Masai Mara, each visited for a night or two, connected by long drives on roads that are not always smooth.
The honest answer is two, maybe three if you fly between them. Amboseli sits southeast of Nairobi. Lake Nakuru sits northwest. The Masai Mara sits further southwest still. Driving all three in sequence means backtracking across the country, not moving efficiently through it.
Two well-chosen parks give you more game drives, more rest, and more time with your guide learning to read the bush, rather than watching it pass through a window at 80 km/h.
The Route: Masai Mara and Amboseli
We recommend pairing a Masai Mara conservancy, such as Mara North or Naboisho, with Amboseli National Park. The conservancies allow night drives and walking safaris, which the main reserve does not. Amboseli adds a completely different landscape: open plains, elephant herds, and Mount Kilimanjaro on the horizon when the skies are clear, usually early morning.
Flying between Nairobi, Amboseli, and the Mara cuts your total transit time from over 15 hours to under 4. Scheduled flights on Safarilink and Air Kenya connect all three most days of the week.

Day-by-Day: A 7 Day Kenya Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Nairobi. Land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, transfer to your hotel, rest. If your flight lands early enough, the Giraffe Centre or Nairobi National Park makes a good half-day.
Day 2: Fly to Amboseli. A short flight from Wilson Airport puts you in Amboseli by mid-morning. Afternoon game drive, with elephant herds against Kilimanjaro if the clouds cooperate.
Day 3: Full day, Amboseli. Two game drives, one at dawn, one late afternoon. Amboseli’s swamps draw elephant, buffalo, and hippo even in the dry season.
Day 4: Fly to the Masai Mara. Connect through Nairobi to a Mara airstrip, arriving early afternoon. Settle into a conservancy camp, then head out for an evening drive, including the option of a night drive if your camp offers one.
Day 5: Full day, Mara conservancy. Lower vehicle density than the main reserve means closer, calmer sightings. Ask your camp about a guided walk if you want to learn tracking on foot.
Day 6: Masai Mara National Reserve. A full day in the reserve itself, timed around the Mara River if the wildebeest migration is crossing, typically July through October.
Day 7: Morning drive, fly home. One last early game drive, then fly back to Nairobi to connect with your international departure.
Is 7 Days Enough for the Big Five?
Lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo are realistic across this route. Rhino is the harder one. Amboseli and the Mara conservancies do not guarantee rhino sightings. Lake Nakuru is Kenya’s most reliable rhino park, which is the main argument for including it if the Big Five checklist matters more to you than pace. Most first-time travelers who take that trade-off later say they wish they had spent that extra day resting in camp instead.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Packing too many parks into too few days is the biggest one. A close second is booking the Masai Mara National Reserve without knowing a conservancy exists. Conservancies cap vehicle numbers per sighting and allow off-road driving and night drives, which the reserve does not.
