Three days with the most photographed elephants in Africa. Amboseli’s big tuskers walk in open country under Mount Kilimanjaro, and when the cloud lifts off the summit at dawn you get the picture everyone comes for: a grey line of elephants crossing in front of a white-capped mountain.
It is a compact park that repays slow drives. The swamps hold hippo, buffalo and hundreds of water birds, and the dry lakebed throws up mirages that make the herds look like they are floating. Perfect either as a short safari on its own or bolted onto a Mara itinerary.
Morning drive south with Kilimanjaro growing in the windscreen, lunch at camp and an afternoon drive among the swamp herds.
Dawn drive for the clearest mountain views, a full day with the elephant families and sundowners looking back at the peak.
Early climb up Observation Hill for the panorama, a final drive and the return to Nairobi by late afternoon.
